Northwest of Nakina, Sim Lake offers the consistently excellent walleye and northern pike fishing for which this region of Ontario has become famous. Rocky and clear, with two deep main-lake basins and a number of mile-long, narrow bays, Sim Lake is an ideal outpost site - though used only intermittently.

Walleyes are the primary sportfish at Sim Lake, and having been lightly fished over the past decade, the fish are above average in size. Early season angling in shallow water produces incredible numbers of fish which run between 1 and 3 pounds, but mid-to-late summer fishing produces larger walleyes - most between 2 and 4 pounds - and the occasional trophy.

Sim Lake features fast-breaking shorelines, numerous mid-lake islands, sharp drop-offs, but no weedgrowth. The lake's irregular shoreline and numerous bays create dozens of points which fall quickly into deep water (16 to 24 feet). These structural features are the keys to fishing Sim Lake successfully - typically with jigs or deep-diving crankbaits. In summer, fishing water in the 14 to 20-foot range out from islands, points or rock piles will consistently produce excellent catches of walleyes. Because walleyes seem to concentrate on Sim Lake's many points, trolling the shoreline is not especially effective because much of it falls sharply into deeper water.

Northern pike are abundant at Sim Lake, typically located in shallower water (6 to 12 feet) and very aggressive. One big northern attacked a walleye on our stringer and we experienced many "bite-offs" while fishing jigs for walleyes. As always in the North, spoons, flashy spinners, jerkbaits and body baits will trigger consistent pike action and lend themselves well to trolling / casting tactics. Fishing across points, along breaklines and over mid-lake humps will immediately put anglers on pike.

Sim Lake Cabin

The 8 man outpost camp is ideally situated in a sheltered channel between the two, main-lake basins. The Sim Lake site offers good swimming atop a shallow sand bar and provides excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing and canoeing.
